News from Nelson - January 2019

Hello, everyone,
I hope that 2019 is treating you all well.

Jan went to the US on 2 January and is now in Grayling Michigan until 13 March. He is starting work at 6.30 each morning, leaving at 6 with a car-load of colleagues, and getting back to the hotel at 6.30 in the evening (12.30pm our time). They are doing somewhere around 70 hours per week, working 7 days.

The temperatures are pretty grim: mostly in the minuses, with the coldest temperature being about minus 36 C, thus far. He has had a cold which he is now recovering from, but is usually in bed by 2.30pm our time. We are using Messenger to stay in touch, usually talking on our Monday, Wednesday and Friday at around 12.30 or 1pm NZT.

He has sent me some video which I have compiled of him driving around the area (as it is too cold to be outside):

Last week in January in Grayling, at the plant, and then the drive home (2.40 min):

A couple of times a week something breaks here, and I have to get a neighbour in to help me (they are all going to start evading me, I am sure). Even simple things like trying to get onto our roof without someone to hold the ladder becomes dangerous when you are on your own and your closest neighbours can't see or hear you. I asked my neighbour Simon to come over when there was water running on the roof. He found to find that the top off the pressure relief valve on the hot water system was missing - and that it may possibly have been missing since it was installed, as it was sitting neatly on the top of bolt, like it had just been put aside for testing. Because it has suddenly started leaking, it may well have blown the wee spring and ball out of the top, but at least Simon found the top and put it back on. A plumber call is now needed for Monday, because - of course - this happened on a weekend.

There is a surprising amount of stuff that works perfectly with two of you, but which doesn't work when you are on your own; even more so when have two dogs trying to 'help' you. I think Finn will stay away from the wheelbarrow now that I have partly run him over though...

I got a truck load of gravel delivered last week, and have been barrowing it around the house to cover the lack-of-lawn (technical term for weeds). We had put shell around the house four or so years ago, unfortunately over weed matting so the shell never compacted and kept sliding. With this gravel, I am trying to decide if I pull the weed matting up and let the gravel compact down with the remains of the shell, or if I leave the weed mat down in the hope that the gravel will sit on top more heavily and not slide away into gaps with the matting shining through. Quandary. However, I now have a piece of work in progress with an all-weather path to the clothesline, which is good (though I need to make some more concrete tiles)... without weed matting. My mother always used the tail end of a jug of boiling water on weeds, and I might try that too.

It has been very hot, with a bit over a week of 30 degree days. I bought some outdoor furniture off TradeMe (sort of NZ Craig's List) so, at long last, there are places to sit outside in the shade. West in the morning, East in the afternoon. I got some excellent bargains - some of which needed repair, but that was part of the enjoyment.

Since Jan left for the US I have been into NMIT for my first meeting of the year, I went to pick up all my 'new' outdoor furniture purchases, and went to John F's birthday party.

Sharon & Ian invited me out for lunch at Moutere Hills Vineyard, which led to a Danube cruise being booked for November which should be quite fun.

Jan & I are also heading off to Fiji in July for the Naenae 50ths, and there is talk of me going to the US in May. However, I suspect that the latter won't happen. In teaching for two organisations, organising deviations to delivery (and deadlines; and dog and house sitters) has to be arranged well ahead. As there seems to be little structure around Jan's start and finish dates, leave, time in lieu etc, I am already suspecting that there will not be a magic conjunction of planets which allows me to tee up cover, sitters and to get a flight at the last minute... !

My brother and I picked up some new furniture for my mother, which 'may need some assembly'... to find that "some" assembly meant entire assembly. I think we spent four hours contorted into some interesting shapes and swearing at drawings. However, all the parts were present, and we put together two new Danish-style lounge chairs with footstools, and a new Danish-style table and chairs. All very light, small, and makes her wee house look a lot more spacious.

I sometimes catch up with some of the neighbours when I am walking the dogs, and a few of them have dropped in for coffee. As it has been so baking, I am going at 7am before it gets too hot, and again at 8.30pm as it starts to cool down. Other than that, I scoot into town to pick up groceries, milk, veg and to clear the post office box once a week or so.

While we have had a couple of friends come out and get firewood earlier on in January, until we have some significant rain, I am not letting anyone else come. The fire danger is now extreme, and it will take a good bit of rain to correct that.

I have half my courses entirely prepared and ready to go for 25 February. The remainder are about halfway through. I have tried to get into writing, but am finding it hard to settle. I am not enjoying Jan being away.

The neighbours down the road are having a party next weekend, which I am going to. Warren is coming for a visit in March, as is Justine, then Jan is back mid-March.

A friend of ours, Paul Tunley, sadly passed away a few days ago following an illness. We miss you, cardigan man :-(

'Til next time

News from Nelson - January 2017

Hi everyone,
We hope all of you are fit and well.

My father has been in hospital for a few days with breathlessness, but has recovered well enough and is now back at home. I think he gave us all a bit of a fright. Strangely enough, in one of those coincidences that seem to happen to Kiwis, he ended up in a bed right next to my sister-in-law's grandfather.

Jan & I have had a lovely break from work, relaxed, read, watched movies, played pool, got out in the sun, and done quite a few jobs around the house.

We have had visitors: Otto and Lara down from Wellington, Warren from Auckland, and Heidi here from Germany.

It was great to have Otto and Lara here. We baked, set up the train, visited Dawn, had fish and chips at Mapua, ate out at the Moutere Tavern, and watched lots of movies:

We went to Golden Bay with Heidi, and, although the weather was pretty overcast, I think we all had a good time. We stopped at Hawkes Lookout; Takaka for morning tea at The Wholemeal Café; The Waikoropupu River and the Springs; Rosy Glow; Langford's Store at Bainham (were I bought a nice new bucket hat); The Naked Possum; The Puponga Café for a picnic outside, then coffee and a view of Farewell Spit from the deck; Wharariki cliffs at Pillar Point; and lastly, Wharariki Beach:

Jan has finally bought chaps for chainsawing, and looks terribly stylish when amongst the trees now!

He has finished all the wood for winter, and is now working on next winter's felling. He also hired a pole saw and had topped all the kanukas outside both sides of our lounge to reclaim some of our view. The kanukas will have bushed out and hedged up by this time next year:

When Warren was here, he and Jan worked hard for two entire days to get the string lights up at long last (although there is still some finishing to do). This means there is only ONE more light to go in for the lighting to be complete. Only the patch panel in the office to finish and the supports on the spare bathroom bench to go and the house will be pretty much finished. And it only took seven years, and we aren't thinking of selling any time soon, so we get to enjoy all the completed jobs ourselves.

On Sunday just gone we had the Sarau Fair, which is the annual blackcurrant festival in Upper Moutere, to celebrate the berry harvest. Jan entered two of his blackcurrant jams - made from Tracey's organic blackcurrants and our 'support' fruit. The flavours were blackcurrant and apple, and blackcurrant and lime. The blackcurrant and lime was by far the nicest.

However, Jan entered the Jam under my name, saying it is 'easier' for Kiwis to read and say... and 'I' won first and second prize for the jams. Well done me ;-D

We have also managed to catch up with the Cools's already this year at the Sarau Fair, along with Stu and Anne, and some visitors from Germany, Wolfgang and Renate.

Our weather has been both good and awful over the summer:

Boo is settling in well, and, aside from totally lacking traffic sense, is a pleasure. Thank you, Erik!

We have larger holidays planned until December, when we think we are going to head to Germany for a few weeks for a - hopefully - white Christmas. I may be going to the Gold Coast once or twice this year for my PhD - possibly July and November. As these trips will be just a few days, if the timing is right, Jan & I will both go. Also, we are both going to Auckland at the end of October and the beginning of November for four days. I have a conference to attend, and, as Jan is only working three days a week, he thought he would join me. This part-time lark is fantastic.

Happy birthday to Mike S, Eberhard, Steph, Gary R, Linda, Kenn, Kathleen, Pat and Kent.

Ka kite ano

Letter for Hope with supporting actor, Jeremy Nelson

A couple of years ago, Jeremy was in a short film as a supporting actor. The film was "Letter for Hope".

New Zealand on Screen has just uploaded the movie, and it can be watched online at http://media-src.nzonscreen.com/0000/9298/15839.1803.HI.m4v or below:

What Otto & Lara got up to on their holidays

Otto and Lara came to stay, and I think they had a pretty good time with us.

What they got up to can be seen below!

We hope they can come and stay again soon, as it was such a pleasure to have them here :-)

And the award for electrical wardrobe lighting goes to...

As previously mentioned, Hartmut came to visit last year, and collectively, he and Jan sorted out a plan for my wardrobe lights. As you can see, Hartmut did indeed purchase the second half of the string, and now Jan has installed them! At last, they are complete:

My Uncle Tom's Funeral

Hi all,
My Uncle Tom died in January this year, after having been in some rest homes and a hospital room at Oakwoods in Richmond for a wee while.

I learned at his funeral in Mapua that his favourite piece of music was Ivan Rebroff's Evening Bells, so I made a wee movie for my Aunty Jill, using some photos that I had, the funeral and a little of the music:

Aunty Jill seemed in reasonable health, and was well looked after by my cousin Gavin and his wife Estelle. Another of my aunts, Diana, came up from Christchurch (with a friend of hers), my parents and my brother and I went. It was very nice - despite the circumstances - to see everyone and to catch up.

News from Nelson: January 2015

Hi everyone,
We have had a busy month or more since I last sent a report. To see much of it in video, watch here:

We have had Lara and Otto to stay, had our New Year's barbecue, been to the Mudcastle Christmas Party and had the Rose Road Christmas Party at Daniel & Diana's. We went up to Wellington for Christmas, and John dog-sat during his tour (very well organised!). We stayed with Brigitte and John in Wellington, and had Weinachten and Christmas lunch at Tina and Jeremy's.

Hartmut & Uta are with us at the moment, visiting us and attending the Adam Chamber Music Festival. They have been on a tour of the West Coast, and have filled their hearts with lovely places, and now that the concerts have started, get to add a musical score to remember their trip by. It is the first time that Uta has visited our house, so has been quite special.

We have the Sarau fair from mid-afternoon, which is more or less our local harvest festival. It celebrates the blackcurrant harvest. Although it is raining very, very lightly - what a blessing after a month of no rain! - I think the event will go ahead as planned. We will all go later in the day and wander around the grounds enjoying the local sights and sounds and catching up with our neighbours from further afield.

Jan, Warren and Mark (an NMIT colleague of mine) did a big day on the chainsaws and felled, split and stacked enough wood for three families for winter. Warren and his brother have, between them, a wood splitter which we were able to use. Fantastic. Otto & Lara were here at the time and helped for the day. It was a BIG workday for everyone. Mark has since been out for another session with Jan. I forgot to take any video - and some of those trees coming down sounded pretty dramatic!

When Otto & Lara were with us they went sailing with Craig and Katherine and Craig's two children, went to Tahuna beach for the day, went to Warren & Trace & Erica's, Lara made a charm bracelet with Erica - her Christmas present from us - at the Bead Gallery (while Otto helped Tracey weed the tunnel houses).

We had Magda and David to visit. We caught up with KT, KB, Bootie, Megan and Will.

We have booked our tickets for Brazil and leave NZ for Sao Paulo on 2 April, returning to Nelson on 20 April. Yay!

A busy month, having lots of fun. Talk soon!

News from Nelson - January 2014

Hi everyone,
Well, it has been a long time since I updated you all! We are both well here, and the new year seems to be getting into swing quite fast.

Sad news is that Jan's other grandmother, Oma Friedel, passed away on Saturday (18 January), three weeks short of her 99th birthday. After a short illness she died in hospital. Gerhard and Eberhard were regular visitors, and Brigitte went over as soon as she could get a flight. The funeral is on the 29th. Tina is heading to Germany on 1 February to help Brigitte with anything that needs doing.

Oma Friedel at Christmas 2013
Jan is very glad that he made the time to go and stay in November last year with her. So no 100th birthday in Germany in February 2015... however, they think they might organise a family get-together on 12 February where family members can share their memories of her.

Our next overseas trip will be to Rarotonga for Mike's wedding in April. Then we will be organising a trip to Brazil to see the Martins; we are not sure if this will be later this year or next year yet. June-July, anyway, regardless of the year.

Jan has just ordered the first of the lounge in-ceiling speakers. Yay! At last we will be able to get rid of some the dangly speaker wires. Once this pair has arrived and been installed, then Jan will order the next pair. We have to do a two stage process; order them online in the US and get them sent to a US address (Barb's boyfriend's sister, Patience, in this instance). Then Patience posts them to us. She is a saint who happens to love Whittakers L&P block so gets her thank yous in bars of white and fizzy chocolate :-)

I have discovered the books of Peter Robinson and am just reading the last of them. I have also read about seven Ruth Rendell Inspector Wexfords too. I have a new Kindle touch and am enjoying that immensely (also care of Patience). My old Kindle has gone to my Father, as he can read the screen just fine on that; but a book is too dense.

We have rediscovered a long-lost cousin: my Uncle Ian's oldest daughter, Kim. I met her with her mum when she was just a wee dot, when I was about five. Kim lives in Dunedin with her family, and we hope that she will come up to Nelson for my father's 80th Birthday party on May 24th this year. I am hoping that we will be able to get all the remaining brothers and sisters together, and as many of the cousins as possible, to have a real family get together. It would be really great. We will see!

Had Aunty Jill out for a visit to our place & Aunty Diana up from Christchurch (and how they both hate being called Aunty). It will be a rellie good year :-)

Andreas's birthday in Germany looked like a very stylish high tea party! Simone sent us photos :-)

Jan has been cutting down trees - and cutting them up for firewood. Getting ready for winter when we haven't even hit our summer straps yet. But very prudent. There is a clip below of Jan felling a tree outside my office. Pesky thing was in my view :-)

Chainsawing, of couse :-)

First meeting of the academic year is happening next Monday. Ouch. I am up in Auckland at a Leadership training session at AUT for two days next week, then Otto & Lara come down to stay for a few days with us. Building some of their own family memories :-)

Masters is going on: and will be in draft by 01 April (just in time to go to Raro for Mike & Donna's shindig).

Bonnie has the early stages of congestive heart failure, but is on meds, so will hopefully be OK for many more years to come (as she is only 7). John is planning on a return to Kiwiland later this year, and hopefully won't notice any changes in her. We have tried Skyping with Bonnie, but she cannot work out where the noise comes from...!

Caught up with Kevin & Sandra at Mapua recently and finished the evening at McKee Domain with the most fabulous moonrise over the bay

Right, that will do for now. I know I have missed out heaps of news, but I have hit the end of my writing endurance!

Take care
